Ajax's October Starts With Free Pumpkins and Ends With an Art Show Sixty Years in the Making

October 8, 2026

"One pumpkin per family, while quantities last." That line sits on the Town of Ajax listing for the Ajax Council Pumpkin Giveaway on Wednesday, October 14. A similar promise comes three days later at Pumpkinville, where the free pumpkin is again offered "while supplies last."

So Ajax gives away free pumpkins twice in one week. The two events come from different sources, sit in different parts of town and ask very different things of a family's evening or Saturday. They also fill most of the family-focused part of the month. From October 21 on, the Town's calendar shifts to book clubs, a gallery weekend and a teen party. In the last week of October, the Town has no events of its own listed.

Here's how the month is laid out, and what each piece requires of you.

Wednesday at Audley is the short version

The Council giveaway runs from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Community Hall at Audley Recreation Centre, 1955 Audley Road. Use Entrance C. It's indoors, on a school night, and lasts two hours.

This year's pumpkins come from Wintermere Sod Growers & Winter Farm Vegetables. The listing also includes:

  • free tote bags for the first 150 attendees
  • free themed refreshments, while quantities last
  • nut-free trick-or-treating provided by local organizations
  • a photo booth and interactive photo spots
  • a Sensory Zone with soft play, crafts and a snoezelen cart

The tote bag limit is the one hard cutoff here. A family that arrives at 7:30 can still expect a pumpkin if any are left, but not a bag. For households in north Ajax, Audley is the closer of the two pumpkin events, and it fits between dinner and bedtime without planning a whole day around it.

Saturday at Greenwood is the full day

Pumpkinville, presented by TD Bank Group, runs Saturday, October 17, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Greenwood Conservation Area, 2290 Greenwood Road. It's run by the Town's Events Team. The Town lists a live stage, children's games, interactive experiences, community displays, a vendor marketplace and trick-or-treating at the exhibitor booths. It also has the Elexicon Energy Haunted House and the Steve & Amanda's No Frills Pumpkin Patch, which the Town calls "a Pumpkinville tradition." Kids are encouraged to come in costume.

The pumpkin is free at both events. Everything else works differently on Saturday.

Getting there is the planning problem

The Town says plainly that on-site parking at Greenwood is limited. A free shuttle runs from three pickup points:

  1. the GO parking lot off O'Brien Court
  2. Ajax Town Hall, 65 Harwood Ave. S.
  3. Audley Recreation Centre, 1955 Audley Rd. N.

The first pickup is at 10:45 a.m. from each location. Buses run about every 20 minutes, and the last one leaves Greenwood at 5:15 p.m. The Town warns that the timing can shift with traffic and weather. In practice, a family that wants the pumpkin patch before supplies run low and a seat on an early bus home should plan around those 20-minute gaps. Parking at Greenwood and hoping for a spot is the riskier plan.

What costs money on the day

The vendor marketplace is marked as paid. Food and drinks carry what the Town calls "nominal fees," and there are ATMs on site. The food vendor list is long and specific: Casa Quelite, Century Delight, Coote's Natural, Falak Haus, Heavenly Dreams, Mr Kettle Corn, Mustache Burger, Ontario Corn Roasters, Smoke's Poutinerie, Sunny Hot Dogs, Sweet Rounds and The Kabab Shoppe.

The community displays draw from across town. Booths include the Girl Guides of Canada, The Children's Book Bank, School of Rock, Drama Kids, EarlyON and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.

The Sensory Zone is built out

Both pumpkin events list a Sensory Zone, and Pumpkinville's is the more detailed. The Town describes a coloring station, inflatables and games, sensory equipment, a sheltered area, a changing station and seating. Noise-canceling headphones can be borrowed free on site.

The Town hasn't published the stage lineup or haunted house hours, and the listing notes that activities may change without notice. Check ajax.ca/pumpkinville the week of the event before telling the kids exactly what they'll see.

A third pumpkin date, still missing its address

The Town calendar also has an "18th Annual Pumpkin Giveaway" on Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It promises pumpkins, face painting, a BBQ, a bake sale and a raffle. As of today, the listing gives no usable venue and no organizer. Until it does, treat it as a possible bonus rather than a plan.

After Pumpkinville, the calendar shifts to adults and teens

Once Greenwood clears on the 17th, the Town calendar changes character. The next confirmed events have nothing to do with pumpkins.

Box Office Books and Brews: The Housemaid. Wednesday, October 21, 6:30 to 9 p.m., at Ajax Centre for the Arts, 78 Church St. S. It's free, run by the Town with Ajax Public Library as partner, and registration is required.

Rooted In Art 60 Years Together. Friday, October 23, at 10 a.m. through Sunday, October 25, at 5 p.m., at 22 Sherwood Road. Free admission and free parking.

TAC Presents: Halloween Party! Friday, October 30, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the Rotary Room at the Main Branch of Ajax Public Library, 55 Harwood Avenue South. It's a drop-in for ages 13 to 19.

Of these, the art show deserves the closest look.

Sixty years on Sherwood Road

Ajax Creative Arts was founded in 1966, which makes this fall's show its 60th-anniversary exhibition. Durham Region has described 22 Sherwood Road West as the Village Community Centre and the club's home, the place where members paint. The show takes place in the same rooms where the work gets made.

"Discover beautiful and inspiring artwork from over 20 local artists, featuring both exciting new talent and returning favourites."

The club's listing also mentions artist demonstrations, a kids' art table, free draws and a Tea Room. It suggests the weekend as a head start on holiday shopping, with the money going to local artists. Even with the kids' table, this is the month's quieter, grown-up weekend. Visitors who'd like to come back after the show can drop in on a regular weekday. The club's site lists member studio time every Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the second Wednesday of the month running until 9 p.m.

Putting the month in order

Laid out by date, Ajax's remaining October looks like this:

Date Event Where Fits best
Wed., Oct. 14 Ajax Council Pumpkin Giveaway Audley Recreation Centre A weeknight with young kids
Sat., Oct. 17 Pumpkinville Greenwood Conservation Area, by shuttle A full family Saturday
Wed., Oct. 21 Box Office Books and Brews Ajax Centre for the Arts Adults, registration needed
Oct. 23 to 25 Rooted In Art 60 Years Together 22 Sherwood Road Browsing and early gift shopping
Sat., Oct. 24 18th Annual Pumpkin Giveaway Venue not yet listed Check back
Fri., Oct. 30 TAC Halloween Party Ajax Main Library Teens 13 to 19

The confirmed family events all fall between October 14 and 17. The October 24 giveaway, billed as free family fun, would add another once its listing shows a venue. A household that can only manage one pumpkin event has a straightforward choice. Pick Audley if a two-hour weeknight stop suits you. Pick Greenwood if you want the haunted house, the food trucks and a shuttle ride as part of the outing. A household that misses both still has the Sherwood Road show the following weekend. Older kids can wait for the library party on the 30th.

Before Pumpkin Week, there's one more event for older residents. The 55+ Fall Dance and Dinner is Tuesday, October 6, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Ajax Community Centre, 75 Centennial Road. Tickets are $18 and include a light meal and live entertainment.

Fitting a month together like this is close to the work we do every day: knowing which dates are fixed and what each step needs from you, so nothing collides. If you're thinking about what your next chapter in Ajax could look like, the team at Fraser & Co. is glad to walk through the timing with you, one clear step at a time. Speak with a Human.
