On Saturday, October 17, Doors Open Whitby opens seven sites from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Five of them work as drop-ins. You arrive whenever you like, look around, and leave. The other two run on a schedule. The Camp X presentations at Intrepid Park start at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Werden's Plan walking tours also start at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and each takes about an hour.
That overlap shapes the whole day. You can catch both if you put one at 11 and the other at 2. If you try for both in the same slot, you'll miss one. Everything else on the list fits into the time around those two fixed starts.

None of the listings mentions advance registration. The Town gives [email protected] as the contact for questions. The Doors Open Ontario page for Whitby has the details for each site. The Town notes that some sites keep different hours.
The walk and three other sites start from one address
The Werden's Plan tour gathers outside the Warren General Store at 900 Brock Street South. The listing also gives the corner of Brock Street South and Burns Street as the starting point. Lynde House shares that address, so the walk, the museum and the store make up a single stop. Burr Lodge, at 918 Centre Street South, is in the same south-end part of town.
This cluster also holds most of the day's history. Lynde House was built around 1812 for Jabez Lynde, and it's described as the oldest home in Durham Region. It is a rare example of the Georgian or Loyalist style. It became a museum in 1972 and moved to its current site in 2014. On October 17, costumed interpreters will tell stories about early Whitby, the Lynde family and 19th-century life. Next door, the Warren General Store will display work by local artists. The museum's own event page lists open-house tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The walk covers the Werden's Plan Heritage Conservation District, Whitby's oldest subdivision. It's named for the subdivision plan Asa Werden laid out in 1854. The heritage district covers the western part of that plan. The listing says the route has full wheelchair access, and photography is allowed.
Burr Lodge is the one site you can't usually visit. It's a private home built in 1855 and attributed to James Wallace, Whitby's second mayor, and it will offer guided tours that day. The listing gives no tour times, so it's easiest to add before or after the walk instead of planning the day around it.
This part of the plan matters because these sites are close together. Lynde House and Burr Lodge stay open until 4, so you can visit them before or after the walk, whichever slot it takes. The walk is what needs a fixed time.
Camp X is a talk at a site where the buildings are gone
The memorial in Intrepid Park sits on the Lake Ontario shore at 2008 Boundary Road. It honors the people who worked at the British Security Coordination spy-training school and communications centre there during the Second World War. More than 500 special agents trained at the site to go behind enemy lines. Camp X is now a National Historic Site.
The site's own listing explains why the presentation times matter. All the buildings have been torn down or moved, and the memorial went up in 1984. There's no building to walk through, so the 11 a.m. or 2 p.m. presentation is the main reason to go. Guided and self-guided tours are also listed. If you get there between talks, you'll find a memorial and the lake, which is still a good visit but a smaller one.
That's why Camp X and the Werden's Plan walk compete for the same slots. Each one is built around a start time, they're in different parts of town, and they begin at the same moment twice in one day.
The flexible sites fill the time between
Three sites have no fixed starts, so they fit around the two timed events.
Station Gallery, at 1450 Henry Street beside Iroquois Park, is in the old Whitby Junction Station, built in 1903. The building was moved on February 16, 1970, and opened as the Whitby Arts Station Gallery on September 26 of that year. For Doors Open, St. John's Anglican Church will be on site to represent its 1846 church. The current exhibition, Pol Turgeon's Station to Station, runs until November 1.
Fire Station 5, the headquarters at 111 McKinney Drive, has the most for kids. The listing includes a special presentation, training demonstrations, obstacle courses, colouring and live music, along with guided tours. The headquarters opened in September 1999. The department hired its first full-time firefighters in 1970. A new training tower was being built at the same address. The Town's July 30 update expected it to be done "later this year." It's not confirmed whether the tower will be finished or open to visitors on the 17th.
Fieldgate Sports Complex opened on September 12. The Town says nearly 10,000 people came to the grand opening. It's west of Baldwin Street South and south of Highway 407, and it covers about 164,000 square feet. Inside are a twin-pad arena, Durham's largest aquatics centre and a double gym with a walking track. Outside is a 13-acre park with Whitby's first artificial turf field. The Doors Open listing doesn't say which areas will be open that day. Fieldgate is in the north end, and the other sites are farther south, so it works best as your first or last stop.
Two ways to split the day
These are the two ways to fit both timed events into one day.
- Walk at 11, Camp X at 2. Start at Lynde House when doors open at 10. Join the walk outside the Warren General Store at 11. When it ends around noon, visit Burr Lodge. Spend the early afternoon at Station Gallery or the fire hall, then get to Intrepid Park for the 2 p.m. presentation. If you have time left, finish at Fieldgate.
- Camp X at 11, walk at 2. Start the morning at the lakeshore for the 11 a.m. talk. Visit Fieldgate, the fire hall or Station Gallery around midday. Be at 900 Brock Street South for the 2 p.m. walk. Afterward, spend the rest of the day at Lynde House, the Warren General Store and Burr Lodge, which all stay open until 4.
The second plan has a small advantage. The heritage sites near the walk are open until closing, so the walk at 2 flows straight into them. In the first plan, Camp X is your last stop, and after the 2 p.m. talk there's only the memorial grounds.
The rest of October
The Doors Open weekend comes just as other fall events are wrapping up. The Brooklin farmers' market at 3 Vipond Road has its last day on Saturday, October 10. The Whitby market at Celebration Square, 405 Dundas Street West, has its last Wednesday on October 14. Station Gallery hosts Thursday Night Live: Fall Edition with Two for the Show on October 15, from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is free, with a suggested $20 donation. If you go Thursday night and come back Saturday, you'll see the gallery twice in one week.
Two more dates fall on the same Saturday, October 31. Pol Turgeon's artist reception runs at Station Gallery from 2 to 4 p.m. The Downtown Whitby Trick or Treat runs from noon to 3 p.m., with trick-or-treating at local businesses, a scavenger hunt and a visit from the Toronto Ghostbusters. Those two events overlap by one hour, the same kind of clash Doors Open has on the 17th.
At Fraser & Co., we plan days in the same order as the itineraries above. We set the fixed times first and fit everything else around them. If you'd like someone to help you think through a move or a sale on that kind of timeline, Speak with a Human.
